Edinburgh is one of my favorite cities to visit, with its stunning historical architecture, rich culture, and vibrant festivals. However, one thing that never ceases to surprise me is how unpredictable the weather can be. No matter what season it is, you have to be prepared for anything — from sudden rain showers to gusty winds, and even the occasional sunny day. Having learned this from my own experience, I want to share some essential packing tips for anyone planning a trip to Edinburgh.
Edinburgh’s Weather
Before diving into the packing essentials, it’s important to understand Edinburgh’s weather patterns. The climate here is oceanic, which means it’s generally mild but can be quite changeable. Even during summer, it’s not uncommon to experience four seasons in one day!
1. Spring (March to May)
Spring in Edinburgh is a time of transition. Temperatures range between 6°C and 14°C (43°F to 57°F), but it can still feel quite chilly, especially in the mornings and evenings. Rain is frequent, and while you might get a few sunny days, you can expect cool winds, particularly if you’re near the coast.
2. Summer (June to August)
Summer is festival season in Edinburgh, and while temperatures are warmer (typically between 12°C and 19°C or 54°F to 66°F), it’s still not what I’d consider hot. Rain showers are frequent, and the wind can make it feel cooler than it is. However, you’ll also get more daylight, with the sun setting as late as 10 p.m.
3. Autumn (September to November)
Autumn in Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful times of the year, but it’s also quite unpredictable. Temperatures drop steadily (around 7°C to 15°C or 45°F to 59°F), and the chance of rain increases. The days get shorter, and mornings can be misty and cool.
4. Winter (December to February)
Winters in Edinburgh are cold, wet, and windy. Temperatures usually hover between 1°C and 8°C (34°F to 46°F), and though snow isn’t guaranteed, it can happen. The wind chill can make it feel much colder, especially if you’re walking through the Old Town’s narrow streets. The days are short, with only about six hours of daylight in December.
Now that we have a sense of what the weather can be like, let’s dive into what you should pack to stay comfortable during your trip.
Packing Essentials for Edinburgh
1. Waterproof Jacket
One of the most essential items you’ll need for Edinburgh, no matter the season, is a good quality waterproof jacket. Trust me when I say, you’ll likely encounter rain during your trip, so it’s best to be prepared. I learned this the hard way during my first visit when I didn’t pack a proper raincoat and ended up soaked while exploring the Royal Mile.
A lightweight, breathable jacket with a hood is ideal for spring, summer, and autumn. In winter, I recommend a thicker, insulated waterproof coat. Look for something that’s both windproof and waterproof — the wind in Edinburgh can make a regular raincoat feel insufficient.
2. Layered Clothing
The key to staying comfortable in Edinburgh’s unpredictable weather is layering. Temperatures can fluctuate throughout the day, so having layers allows you to adjust accordingly. I usually pack:
- Base layers: Lightweight t-shirts or long-sleeved tops made of breathable fabrics like cotton or merino wool.
- Mid-layers: Sweaters, hoodies, or fleece jackets for added warmth.
- Outer layers: A windproof and waterproof jacket for those windy, rainy days.
This layering system keeps me warm during chilly mornings and evenings while allowing me to peel off layers during the warmer parts of the day. In summer, you can get away with lighter layers, but in winter, you’ll need thicker mid-layers like wool sweaters or thermal tops.
3. Comfortable Walking Shoes
Edinburgh is a city best explored on foot, but the cobblestone streets and steep hills can be challenging if you don’t have the right footwear. I always pack a pair of comfortable, waterproof walking shoes or boots. These are perfect for trekking up Arthur’s Seat, walking along Princes Street, or navigating the steep alleys of the Old Town.
In summer, I might also bring a pair of lightweight trainers, but they still need to be sturdy enough for long walks. If you’re visiting in winter, I recommend insulated boots with good grip — the cobblestones can get slippery when wet or icy.
4. Scarf, Hat, and Gloves
Even in the warmer months, Edinburgh’s wind can make it feel colder than it actually is, especially in exposed areas like Calton Hill or Arthur’s Seat. A lightweight scarf is a great item to pack for spring, summer, and autumn. In winter, I bring a wool scarf, along with a warm hat and gloves.
If you’re visiting in the colder months, make sure your gloves are insulated and windproof. I’ve spent many a chilly evening in Edinburgh regretting not packing proper winter gear.
5. Umbrella
While a waterproof jacket is essential, I also like to carry a small, collapsible umbrella for those quick rain showers. However, be warned — Edinburgh is known for its strong winds, which can easily flip an umbrella inside out. I’ve seen more broken umbrellas than I can count! That’s why I often rely on my hooded jacket when the wind picks up, but a sturdy, windproof umbrella can still come in handy.
6. Daypack
A small daypack is ideal for carrying your essentials while exploring the city. I usually pack a water bottle, map, camera, and an extra layer in case the weather changes. It’s also a great place to stash any souvenirs you pick up along the way. Make sure your daypack is water-resistant or has a rain cover to protect your belongings from unexpected downpours.
7. Reusable Water Bottle
Staying hydrated is important, especially when you’re doing a lot of walking. Edinburgh has plenty of places where you can refill a reusable water bottle, and it’s a great way to save money and reduce plastic waste. I always carry mine when I’m out exploring.
8. Sunglasses and Sunscreen
Believe it or not, Edinburgh does get sunny days, especially in the summer. I’ve been caught off guard by the bright sun while strolling through the city, so I always pack a pair of sunglasses. It’s also a good idea to bring some sunscreen, as even on cloudy days, the UV rays can still cause sunburn.
9. Power Adapter
If you’re coming from outside the UK, don’t forget to pack a power adapter. The UK uses a Type G plug, with three rectangular prongs. I always carry a universal adapter so I can charge my phone, camera, and other electronics.
10. Camera
Edinburgh is one of the most photogenic cities in the world, with its stunning medieval architecture, sweeping vistas, and charming streets. I always bring my camera to capture the beauty of places like Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, and the view from Arthur’s Seat. If you’re into photography, a camera with a good zoom lens is ideal for capturing those panoramic cityscapes.
11. Snacks
If you’re planning a hike up Arthur’s Seat or a long day of sightseeing, I recommend packing some snacks to keep your energy levels up. While Edinburgh has plenty of great cafes and restaurants, sometimes it’s nice to have something on hand for those moments when you’re far from the city centre or just need a quick bite.
Seasonal Packing Tips
Spring and Autumn Packing Tips
For spring and autumn, it’s all about layers. A medium-weight jacket, sweaters, and long-sleeved tops are key, as temperatures can vary throughout the day. You’ll also need to be prepared for rain, so waterproof clothing is a must. I usually pack a mix of lighter and warmer layers to accommodate the changing weather.
Summer Packing Tips
While summer in Edinburgh is warmer, it’s still a good idea to pack a jacket and layers, as evenings can get cool. I also recommend packing lighter clothes for daytime wear, but keep in mind that rain and wind can still occur, even in the summer. A waterproof jacket and sturdy walking shoes are still essential.
Winter Packing Tips
In winter, I focus on warmth and waterproofing. A thick, insulated coat, thermal layers, and warm accessories like hats, scarves, and gloves are non-negotiable. Waterproof boots are essential for walking around the city, especially if it snows or if the streets are icy.
Edinburgh is a city that demands a bit of preparation when it comes to packing, but with the right gear, you’ll be able to enjoy everything it has to offer, no matter the weather. Whether you’re visiting in the chilly winter months or during the vibrant summer festivals, packing layers, waterproof clothing, and comfortable shoes will ensure that you stay warm, dry, and comfortable throughout your trip.
